The Parents Group
The Parent's Group has been running over a year. It's on
Thursday mornings every two weeks.
We invite other organisations to come in and they talk about
things like benefits, sexual health, health action plans, domestic
violence, healthy eating and keeping safe.
Working with the Create Centre we learn to keep our children
safe at home, and when we go out.
We get together for healthy walks around Bristol. This helps us
to keep fit and the children to keep fit. We get to meet other
families outside of Social Services, and hospitals.
We meet up to share problems and experiences. It's nice to meet
other parents with learning difficulties. Other parent groups are
not accesssible to us. The things that affect us are not important
to other groups.
This group helps us to support each other. We help each other
when we have problems, anything from our children getting upset to
how to report a hate crime when we have been bullied in the
street.
Most of us have had experiences with the Social Services, not
understanding how to support us and sometimes trying to remove our
children. At times like this it is good to have the support of
other parents with learning difficulties and People First.
The trip to Bristol Zoo was very popular and we are going to go
again. These trips help our children to see that other parents with
learning difficulties can be good parents.
We have planned a First Aid Course so we will be able to look
after our children when they get hurt.
In the future we will be sharing our stories about parents with
learning difficulties with other groups. We've been invited to work
with the Maternity Services to help them to help other parents who
have a learning difficulty.
Our group is getting larger all the time. If you would like to
